Prepare a difficult conversation without a script to win
Open with an observation, ask a real question and agree on the next step.
Describe what happened
Use a specific observation rather than a judgement about character. “The report arrived after the agreed time” gives you something to discuss. “You never care” invites an argument about identity. Separate what you saw from the story you tell yourself about why it happened.
Ask before you conclude
Explain the effect on the work or relationship and ask how the other person saw the situation. Listen for constraints you did not know about. You can acknowledge their perspective without agreeing with every claim. If the conversation becomes unsafe, pause and seek appropriate support.
Agree on something observable
Finish with a concrete next step, an owner and a time to review it. Repeat the agreement in plain language. If you still disagree, record what remains unresolved instead of pretending the conversation solved everything. Progress can be a clearer problem and a safer way to return to it.
